Questions Liberals Can’t Answer
John Hawkins – Townhall

If people in the middle class aren’t willing to pay enough in taxes to cover the government services that they use because they don’t think it’s worth the money, shouldn’t we prune back government to a level people do feel comfortable paying for in taxes?

  1. I’m not a liberal exclusively, but no, small government isn’t necessarily better any more than big government is. Better is better, and sometimes that’s a big job, sometimes a small one. If you “prune back” services only some need, because others are unhappy paying for it, you get situations like what happened at the VA. And ignoring problems like fixing bridges and railroad tracks (definitely not sexy) is a big government job where neglect has dangerous consequences.

A better way to look at it than “big vs small” is an emphasis upon making sure we receive adequate VALUE (in goods and services) for the taxes we pay. To do it we need to vote for people who have smart plans to address problems, not simplistic approaches. Complex problems require complex solutions, otherwise you just create a wave of unanticipated negative consequences. Our overly simple approach to Iraq (for example) keeps regurgitating back on us, and it costs a boatload of money.
