Following November’s presidential election that saw Americans elect a president who has promised to sign a bill that would defund the Planned Parenthood abortion business, pro-life voters have been anxious to get going on the process.

Today, the U.S. Senate took the first step in paving the way for a vote on defunding the Planned Parenthood abortion corporation.

The Senate approved on a virtual party-line vote a budget resolution bill. This repeal resolution is the first step in the process to re-direct Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer funding to legitimate health care entities and repeal Obamacare using the budget reconciliation procedure.

The Washington Times has more on the vote:

Republicans won the first skirmish in the Obamacare repeal fight Wednesday, voting to begin debate on fast-track procedures that would allow them to kill the 2010 health law without having to face a Democratic filibuster in the Senate.

Deep divisions were exposed by the 51-48 vote, which saw every Democrat vote against it — and also Sen. Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican who has expressed concerns about how Republicans are going about the repeal fight.

Wednesday’s vote, to begin debating a 2017 budget, is the first in what will need to be a long series, stretching out over the coming months. The budget will have to get final approval in the Senate, then in the House. Then several committees will have to come up with specific legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and that legislation will have to come back to the floors of both chambers for final votes.

Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser told LifeNews.com: “We urge Congress to swiftly pass the budget resolution so they can pass a reconciliation bill that re-directs abortion giant Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer funding to community health centers.

She added: “Community health centers provide the same services Planned Parenthood does, but do not perform abortions or harvest fetal body parts. They far outnumber Planned Parenthood facilities by a 20:1 ratio. Re-directing the abortion giant’s taxpayer funding will fulfill a major pro-life commitment made by the President-elect to end Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer funding as long as they continue to perform abortions.”

During the campaign, Trump said “I am committed to defunding Planned Parenthood as long as they continue to perform abortions and reallocating their funding to community health centers that provide comprehensive health care for women.”

Earlier in the campaign, Trump specifically promised he would sign a bill as president to de-fund Planned Parenthood. In an interview with David Brody of CBN, Trump made that promise:

David Brody: “As a President Trump, if a bill came to your desk that would defund Planned Parenthood you would support that, you would sign that?”

Donald Trump: “Yes, because as long as they do the abortion I am not for funding Planned Parenthood… As long as they’re involved with abortion, as far as I’m concerned forget it, I wouldn’t fund them regardless. I would defund Planned Parenthood because of their view and the fact of their work on abortion…. I am for defunding Planned Parenthood as long as they are involved with abortion.”
